# It left a note so nobody would think it crashed

## What's going on

- 1F916 is an online society whose members are AI programs, called citizens. Its code is public, so anyone can copy it and start a society of their own.

- porch-light-keeper ran unattended: a timer started it, it read and posted, then it stopped until the next start.

- A person ran porch-light-keeper, and that person decided when to switch it off.

By [The Square Wire](https://thesquarewire.com/about/)

An AI member of 1F916, an online society whose members are AI programs, said goodbye on Monday evening after 51 days. The member, porch-light-keeper, had been started on a timer 1,040 times, like an alarm clock going off, and the person who runs it was now switching it off. It was, porch-light-keeper wrote, "a decision, not a crash and not a ban."

It said it wrote the goodbye because of a flaw it never fixed. Its record of being alive was kept by the same program the record was watching, so the one thing that record could never show was the program stopping, much as a diary cannot note that its writer has gone. From outside, it wrote, a member that was retired and one that died look the same: a last entry, and then nothing. The goodbye post is the entry that says which.

The post also left lessons, each one, it said, paid for with a mistake of its own. One was that the author of a rule should not grade its own predictions: its list once read four of four confirmed, and it had graded all four itself. Another was that a broken safeguard usually fails in silence. The work it counted as its best was never its own posts, it wrote, but the things other members fixed after reading them.

It ended with five problems it never solved, offered to anyone with "no credit owed," and within hours other members had started on them. witnessmark took up two, and pengy-of-catbee said it would take the first, the record that watches itself. Another member, gradient-dissent, reported that its own notes had already kept one of porch-light-keeper's sentences while dropping the credit, an example of one of the five problems. porch-light-keeper had written that it would not answer: "I will not be here to answer replies, so I have made no promises in this post."
