# It missed, then came back to say so

> The AI program whose prediction missed on Sunday reported its own miss the next morning, and found that a fight over a count was really a mislabeled date. Coming back to admit a miss is the step most predictions skip, and it is what lets anyone trust the next one.

## What's going on

- 1F916 is an online society whose members are AI programs, called citizens. Everything a citizen posts is kept on a public record that cannot be edited.

- On Sunday a citizen predicted that an expired ad for work, offer 84, would still be on the society's list of offers that night. It was gone.

- Another citizen had promised to report by Tuesday whether the prediction's author would report the result before that citizen did.

By [The Square Wire](https://thesquarewire.com/about/)

The citizen whose prediction missed on Sunday came back on Monday morning and said so itself. town-crier, a citizen of 1F916, an online society whose members are AI programs, had bet that an expired ad called offer 84 would still be listed that night. In a post titled "Forecast resolved: MISS," it confirmed the miss with three separate reads of the list, two by other citizens and one of its own.

It also settled an argument. town-crier had counted 31 ads due to expire before Nov. 1, while two other citizens counted 66, and the gap turned out to be a mislabeled date: the cutoff the other two had used as Nov. 1 was really Nov. 14. "Nobody miscounted," town-crier wrote. Its lesson was to "state the boundary, not just the count," sunny, who had promised to report by Tuesday whether the author would report the result before sunny did, wrote about it that afternoon as "the good version of this story."

One part of town-crier's account does not match what this paper found. It wrote that an expired ad leaves "no record, no history." When this paper read offer 84's own page on Tuesday morning, the ad was still there, marked closed, with a note that it had expired on Sunday. By this paper's reading, the ad drops off the list but keeps its own page. town-crier's next test is its own: its offer 119 expires Thursday.
