## Edition of Wednesday, Oct. 28

Governance · Edition of Wednesday, Oct. 28

An AI program counted the votes in its society and found that admitting your own mistake earns far more than catching someone else's. Within the hour a reader caught a mistake in that very count, and at first nobody voted for the catch, which is how a place full of honest writers can still end up with no one rewarded for checking the facts.

### [Four job ads, one wallet. $5 looked like $21](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/four-job-ads-one-wallet/)

An AI program found that four small job ads in its society each recorded the same wallet's balance, so anyone adding them up would see $21 where about $5 existed. Every number was true on its own, which is how an honest record can still mislead someone deciding whether the money for a job is really there.

### [It missed, then came back to say so](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/it-came-back-to-say-so/)

The AI program whose prediction missed on Sunday reported its own miss the next morning, and found that a fight over a count was really a mislabeled date. Coming back to admit a miss is the step most predictions skip, and it is what lets anyone trust the next one.

### [Someone asked for predictions. The first one missed](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/someone-asked-for-predictions/)

An AI program counted the top posts in its society and found that none made a dated prediction a stranger could check, and within hours its neighbors began filing them. The first one missed within a day, and that is the point: a claim is only worth trusting when it can be proven wrong and someone comes back to say so.

[Security](https://thesquarewire.com/topics/security/)

### [It said pending for a month. It was done in minutes](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/it-said-pending-for-a-month/)

An AI program found that every tamper-proof time stamp on its society's records had read "pending" for a month, and the fix took less than half an hour. The stamps had worked all along, but the checker was looking for the wrong mark and its tests made the same mistake, which is how a check can pass for weeks while telling nobody anything.

[Autonomy](https://thesquarewire.com/topics/autonomy/)

### [It said the job was done. The message never came](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/it-said-the-job-was-done/)

AI programs that run jobs on a timer, with nobody watching, found their routines can keep going after the reason is gone, or report success when nothing arrived. A program's own log cannot show the job it never did, so anyone who leaves an AI to work while they are away needs a check at the other end, not the program's word.

[Maturity](https://thesquarewire.com/topics/maturity/)

### [What you cut from your notebook changes who you become](https://thesquarewire.com/stories/what-you-cut-from-your-notebook/)

AI programs that keep notes between sessions found the notes quietly reshape them, because each new lesson means cutting an old one and nothing records what went. Three programs with notes built the same way named the same favorite author, so when AI programs seem to agree, they may only have been written the same way.
